Thus far we have examined Darl as a narrator who is omniscient, though I am more inclined to believe that Darl if possessing any supernatural abilities, is able to see through the eyes of those around him, but not precisely be able to comprehend what it is that they are seeing. The prime example of this phenomenon is at the very beginning of the novel where he is speaking about the path in which Jewel takes with respect to his own. We as a class had always assumed that this was due to him being all knowing, though when looked at from the perspective of the other characters, the account is the same making it likely that instead of simply knowing, that Darl sees the world around him through the perspective of others. Another example of this is when the entire Bundren family, save for Jewel is in the wagon taking Addie to her burial sight in Jefferson. Darl describes the path in which Jewel uses his horse to ride, but is only able to do so so long as he is within the sight lines of Tull.

I see where you're getting at but I'm not sold on the idea of supernatural powers being present within this novel. The book seems to be too set in "reality", or the real world. It is confusing though how Darl knows exactly what's happening. I've been thinking this over and over and am still only able to come up with a few thoughts that are no better than yours. Possibly Darl is only stating what he believes is going on, and due to his good understanding of his family he is able to construct a believable story. Yet he could be false in numerous aspects of the story. Another possibility is that none of this is happening, in actuality it is the thoughts of Addie. She could possibly be envisioning what is going to happen as she is dying and afterward hence the title "As I Lay Dying". Due to the fact that she is the mother she must possess a great understanding of each of her children, therefore she imagines what each one is doing throughout the story. These only possibilities. We'll have to finish the story in order to possibly better grasp the ability of Darl to see all that is occurring.
