How one character narrates or is described by another character after Addie’s death gave readers deeper insights about the characters. Within the Bundren family itself, the children – specifically Cash and Vardaman – respond very differently to Addie’s death.
After Addie’s death, Cash narrates a chapter for the first time in the novel because he had finally finished building the coffin and had time to talk. However, he only listed reasons for choosing to make the coffin on a bevel, which read as heartlessness because he did not show any emotions concerning Addie’s death.
On the other hand, Vardaman’s response to Addie’s death differed greatly. He cried, vomited, and complained multiple times that Addie died. He said, “You kilt my maw!” and “You kilt her!” (Faulkner 54, 55). This additionally showed developmentally issues because he could not comprehend Addie’s death.
