From what we have read throughout the novel, Cash only seems to be interested in the coffin that he's building for his mother. While she's dying, he works on the coffin. When he's dead, he works on the coffin. Why did he spend his last few moments with his mother, working on the coffin? At points, it seems as if he's in denial. At other times, it seems as if he's projecting his emotions onto building the coffin. Is Cash using different defense mechanisms to cope with his mother's death? Or does he simply not care?
