After reading this chapter a few times I am still confused on who Dewey Dell is constantly referring to. From the first line to the very end she continues to say "he". Such as "He could do so much for me if he just would"(58). Any ideas would be much appreciated.

I was very curious about that too. Upon looking back to Dewey Dell's narration in Chapter 7, it becomes very clear that Dewey Dell and Lafe had some sort of sexual relation. Dewey Dell contrinually repeats the phrase "I could not help it" (27). She explains that she then "saw Darl and he knew. He said he knew without words...and [she] said 'Are you going to tell pa are you going to kill him?' without the words" (27). This proves that Darl was aware of her romantic situation. In Chapter 13, the "he" you are referring to is mentioned again as Dewey Dell insists that she would "let him come in between [her] and Lafe, like Darl came in between [her] and Lafe" (59). From this we can assume that the "he" knows about Lafe and could help. Because she seems so desperate for help in regards to Lafe, one can assume that Dewey Dell is likely pregnant.

I definitely think she's pregnant."God gave women a sign when something has happened bad" (58) was a big hint. And her encounter with the bursting cow that she refuses to milk gave me that idea too. I originally thought that "he" was Darl, but it can't be as she later says "he" could "come in between me and Lafe, Like Darl came in between me and Lafe" (59). So it can't be Lafe either. It could be Anse; we know he wont take any action, but maybe Dewey Dell doesn't. I think a case could be made for Peabody, as he's now with the Bundrens and he is really the only one that can help.

Dewey Dell is a very confusing person to understand though I do believe that it may be Cash that she is referring to because he is the oldest and could possibly help her with her pregnancy.

I was wondering this as well as I read this section. I definitely agree that Dewey Dell is pregnant. I think that she had some sort of sexual relationship with Lafe, but something must have happened because I do not think that it ended well. I agree with Megan about Peabody being the one that Dewey Dell is saying can help her. I don't think that any of the other characters have the ability to help her at this point, and since Peabody is a doctor and is currently at the Bundren house, I can't help but think that she wants his help. This also brought up another question in my mind: does she want Peabody's help to abort the baby, or does she want his help to take care of herself and her baby in the future? Does she want to keep Lafe's baby?
