Simon Armitage is not a man who started out venturing through the world. In fact, his time studying geography at Portsmouth Polytechnic was really his first time away from home. As a result, the homesickness that ensued nearly led him to drop out of college and return to his hometown of Marsden. In an attempt to endure life away from home and secure a future for himself as a geologist, Armitage began to distract himself from the compulsive need to always return home by expressing himself through poetry.
By sticking through school, Simon was able to continue onward to complete Post-Graduate work at Manchester University. Somewhat telling of his personality and care for others was his choice to write his graduate thesis on the role television violence played in the lives of young offenders.
Being a probation officer in Greater Manchester, Armitage has come across many troubled individuals throughout his life, many of which have inspired his poetry. In Tyrannosaurus Rex Versus the Corduroy Kid, the title specifically takes after what Simon sees as a conflict between Manchester government (the dinosaur) and the human wills of society (corduroy kid). Armitage’s ability to channel his thoughts and opinions
Since retiring from being a probation officer in 1994, Armitage has lectured at the University of Leeds, University of Iowa, and Manchester Metropolitan University. A fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, Simon’s works are so popular in England that they often appear on a variety of Standardized English tests throughout the country.
Over time, Armitage developed in to the full-time poet that he is today. His art of creating poetry not just of specific images, but rather creating images and using them in order to convey an important message to the reader has led to the creation of some of his best works; Xanadu, The Dead Sea Scrolls, Book of Matches, and Tyrannosaurus Rex Versus the Corduroy Kid to name a few.
The works of Simon Armitage are not what one might refer to as a “light read”. In fact, Armitage’s poems are heavy and filled with meaning. The reader who picks up a volume of these poems to just skim through them is missing out. The poems of Armitage are meant to be thought out and experienced.
