From having the four person family and white picket fence, the American dream has evolved into the achievement of power. It has affected society by centering it on being constantly perfect and peerless. In order to obtain more power Americans wish things to be done according to their preferences. Any other way is regarded as potentially compromising America’s power. This can be seen in the recent debate on China joining Obama’s newly proposed free trade alliance, the Trans-Pacific Partnership. However, compromise is difficult when different cultures and beliefs clash. Also, the fear of losing power ultimately leads people to do anything in order to achieve it. By deeming American ways the absolute best, America uses fear to maintain their hold on power because they cannot accept any other solutions other than theirs, which is exemplified in the present trade conflict with China.
The belief America is the most powerful nation results in a fear of losing the power they already have. Politicians, being the main culprits of generating fear, speak about the chaos that will occur as a result of decreasing American dominance. President Obama utilizes the idea of fear as a means to gain opposition of China’s increase in power due to trade. China’s growing rate of exportation generates profit while the decreasing rate in America creates economic trouble. Fearful of his country falling behind its competitors is what initial sparks Obama’s to call for the free trade plan with China. Gaining support for this plan was simple for him due to his warning that without the success of the agreement America will surely fail to remain the nation to beat. The horror of not having supreme power gives Obama the support since his fear leads to the peoples fear’s, compelling people to do whatever is necessary to maintain power.
By using the fear of the loss of power America persuades the people in supporting its solution as opposed to another nations; increasing their power even more. Americans have a difficultly in approving of other nation’s ways since they always regard themselves as correct. President Obama continually criticizes China’s way of trading with the United States calling it irresponsible. Furthermore, he states how China does not follow specific American rules which have been set up to use universally during trade. On the other hand, they are likely in favor of America due to natural human bias; giving Americans even more success. Due to a lack of acceptance, Obama feels the need to have China conform to their ways in order to demonstrate power for his nation and stay at the top.
As seen in the debate over free trade with China, America uses fear in order to receive more power by forcing their methods on other nations to ultimately uphold their place as the strongest nation. Fear, is a major tactic which deceives American’s to do anything in order to rid of their terror. This is exemplified by President Obama stating how the United States would lose power to China if China did not agree to participate in the free trade agreement he proposed. On the other hand, this plan was at first proposed to retain power since the only solution is the American solution. President Obama used this plan in order to keep power while using fear as a means to execute the plan. Originally having a positive effect, the patriotic ideal of America being the greatest nation created negative repercussions by condoning the use of fear as a means to get what America wants in order to preserve their power.
