The Puritanical concept of representative selfhood follows the logic that by furthering oneself one is thereby furthering his/her community. This coupled with the ability of the Puritans to be self-reliant is what ultimately lead to long- term American economic success. Although their sacred beliefs have long since died out, their secular ideologies have persisted as the pillars of American society. In recent times of economic crisis however, a growing number of individuals have denounced these principles as unfair and socially immoral. The Occupy Wall Street protestors have dismissed the secular Puritanical code as a flawed system and seek a society that would not have the ability to thrive as a capitalist one can. The abandonment of the secular Puritanic code will lead to the ruin of American society and its financial system.
The first pillar that the protestors have failed to comprehend is that America has succeeded as a society because the American people do things for the purpose of furthering themselves and by doing so they are furthering the entire American society. The protesters however, are asking what their country can do for them instead of what they can do for their country. If a society were to exist in which the government greatly supported the individual, the incentive for an individual to further oneself from ordinary to extraordinary would not exist, and therefore the society would effectively be incapable of maintaining growth and economic prosperity. Henceforth, it can be determined that in order for America to be financially secure, its citizens must have an incentive to work towards achieving personal financial security.
Furthermore, the Occupy protests are nothing but a series of complaints. By protesting, the protestors are just informing others about their perception of society’s injustices. In a sense, the protestors are not actually doing anything effectively good for America, where instead they should be attempting to get an elected official to support their cause so they can begin becoming the change that they want to see in America. In addition, instead of abandoning all responsibilities and camping out in parks, protestors should be working towards a goal of achieving personal fiscal security because if an individual in debt does not try to pay off that debt, the debt will never be paid off.
In conclusion, if American society were to conform to these socialist tendencies, it would fall to pieces because when the individual is fully responsible for society, the individual begins to lack personal responsibility. Because representative selfhood is a key tenet to American society today, it is important that all future legislative bodies take into account that laws which provide incentives for the individual to succeed economically must be protected at all costs. Likewise, laws that inhibit the ability for personal growth must be abolished in order to fully unlock the potential of American society. In order to regain fiscal stability lawmakers and political activists must abide by the concept of representative selfhood or suffer further failures and economic crises.
