Making the Most Out of Opportunites
In today’s world, the economy is a major problem that has been plaguing countries around the globe. Italy, which was once a healthy political capital, has been caught up in Europe’s massive debt crisis and has witnessed a crumbling government. Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi resigned over the past week, paving a way for European Commission member Mario Monti to take his position. It’s interesting that when a crisis like this exposes itself, it can be perceived as an opportunity for certain individuals to gain a higher degree of power. This is similar to The Crucible, in which Abigail uses the crisis of witchcraft to her advantage in order to gain trust and power.
Being held responsible to lead a new cabinet of technocrats until the economic situation has ultimately stabilized and the opportunity for new elections can be held is a huge responsibility. The pitiful economy of Italy has caused serious concern and hysteria among its citizens, just as witchcraft did to the people of Salem. People are desperate for answers to their problems which allow certain figures to have their chance to produce change. This being said, Monti unveiled a cabinet made up primarily of academics, with himself being finance minister. His initial intent was to include individuals from major political parties into his cabinet in an attempt to share the political cost of the government’s program. Being a voice that his people can trust will goes a long way in acquiring power in Monti’s case. He will help aid his people through new philosophy and mend a broken country whose gross domestic product was only supposed to increase 0.1% over the next year. Although it wasn’t to better the people of Salem, Abigail did use the crisis in order to upgrade her rank in the community. Like Monti, she stepped up during the commotion and provided answers to her people; and by doing so gained trust and power. On the other hand, unlike Monti, Abigail didn’t tell the truth to gain power, and she did it for her own achievement not to benefit her fellow people. Being in the right place at the right time paid off for these two, for they were present as the crises in their homes had reached a boiling point.
It’s a natural occurrence for dilemmas to transpire around the world, but and it’s those situations that provide the opportunity for change and acquirement of power. When Prime Minister Berlusconi stepped down from his dying government, it was Mario Monti’s chance to shine as a new opportunity and challenge was accessible. When the fear that an outbreak of witchcraft was at hand, Abigail embarked her own path to power by using her lies and persuasion to gain her peoples’ trust. Both of these figures took full advantage of the crisis at hand in order to gain power and because of that, led their homes into an environment that pulsates with change.
