Confessions of a Teenage Delinquent
In today’s world we live in a society where the media often plays a large part. It has the power to build people up or bring them down. It seems as though the only way to better ones reputation or gain attention is by the manipulation of a crisis. In The Crucible Abigail’s position on the social ladder was just above that of a slave’s. When she started to accuse people of being witches she climbed in status and became important. Lindsay Lohan, on the other hand, started out being very popular, crashed, and is now trying to regain her status by attracting the wrong kind of attention. She used to be a successful actress but now the only way for her to be noticed is by doing something drastic.
For Lindsay Lohan any attention is good attention. “You will never see me in a nude scene. Then there’s no mystery for my private life.” Lohan uttered these words in 2005 when she had multiple blockbusters and had solidified her status as America’s sweetheart. Just six years later her reputation had plummeted to an all time low. In 2005 her parents separated and it was exposed that Lindsay was experimenting with drugs and was rapidly losing weight due to bulimia. After a series of unsuccessful films Lindsay’s real problems began to happen. Lohan was reportedly broke and at the time was not a focus of the tabloids. It can be speculated that her run-ins with the law were just publicity stunts and a way to gain more attention. Her most recent crime was in January 2011 when she was caught allegedly stealing a necklace from a jewelry store while on probation. She was sentenced to 120 days in prison for the crime—of which she served only 35 days under house arrest due to jail overcrowding—360 hours of community service at the Downtown Women’s Center in L.A., and 120 hours at the L.A. County morgue. On October 19 she failed to attend her community service sessions at the Downtown Women’s Center and then arrived late to her community service at the morgue in a new Porsche, which puts into question her money problems. Now Lindsay has reportedly decided to do a nude photo shoot in Playboy for close to $1 million. She is going against her original words made in 2005 in order to obtain money and publicity. Lohan was in a slump with her film career and used her misdemeanors as a way to bring attention to herself. She is using all of the drama surrounding her to her advantage in order to get back into the public eye.
Our society creates an atmosphere where one can act out in order to attract the public’s attention. The tabloids make it easy for everyone to scrutinize a celebrity’s every move and make one’s own and sometimes biased judgments. This can be said for Lindsay Lohan and also in some ways for Abigail. Abigail manipulates her audience to gain meaning and importance in society whereas Lindsay uses her crisis to create publicity and put her back in the public eye. It seems as though she is advertising herself to the general public through her behavior. Society feeds off of celebrities’ actions and celebrities in turn use this to promote themselves for personal gain.
