Throughout my reading of the novel i have noticed constant references to the physical appearance of the Scarlet Letter as well as the emotions that it brings about and how it affects the other characters. This characterization of the letter allows it to take on a life and personality within the context of the novel.
Describe this personality of the letter as well as what it means/ symbolizes to the various characters in the novel. How do these meanings different? How are they similar?

For all the characters, the letter is a visual symbol for Hester's sin. However, for the members of the Puritan society, it serves as a constant reminder of the negative effects of sinning; the leaders of the society forced Hester to wear the letter to thwart off any thoughts of sinning. For Pearl, the letter defines her mother's identity. Specifically, Pearl distinguishes her mother from other mothers by the scarlet letter on Hester's clothing. For Hester, the letter serves as a means of civil disobedience in which she seeks reform and non-conform to society in a civil manner. It also serves to advertise Hester's needlework, thus supporting her business and allowing her to make a sufficient amount of money.
