[Hook:]
If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in the river at dawn
Send me away, me away, me away
Send me away
[Verse:]
Dear professor, I been in my room
Think im goin a little crazy or maybe it's the shrooms
Im addicted to the thrill, the dream of being big
I don't ever wanna die, but im hating how I live
And its getting so bright, these moments getting better
Doing shows I never dreamed of, I want this shit forever
In this city I came, this city done changed
Everybody I knew saying I am not the same
We on the verge baby, it's the come up song
A lil toast to the coast I done came up on
Getcha camera baby it's a night for the ages
Twenty years young, having fun getting wasted
[Hook:]
Send me away, send me away, send me away,
Me away, me away
If I die
If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in the river at dawn
Send me away, me away, me away
Send me away
[Verse:]
Dear professor, I been on the road
Gotta do it like you told me, im only getting old
I been sitting on my hope, just waiting for a rope
A little bit to pull me out the bottom of this hole
Well it's getting so dark, these nights are getting longer
Hope I fall a million times just to stand up stronger
I don't wanna die yet, but fuck it if I do
Put your cup up in the air, bury me up in this booth
We on the verge baby, it's the come up song
A lil toast to the coast I done came up on
Getcha camera baby it's a night for the ages
Twenty years young, having fun getting wasted
[Hook:]
Send me away, send me away, send me away,
Me away, me away
If I die
If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in the river at dawn
Send me away, me away, me away
Send me away
This song speaks to the general mindset of Jamie in Long Day's Journey into Night. The song itself focuses in on the group's members and the 'young, wild, and free' mentality that they possess, saying "Twenty years young, having fun getting wasted." This is obviously not Jamie's position, being 33, "stout and lacking his father's vitality" (O'Neill 19). However, he can certainly relate to the going out and partying aspect of the lyrics, and in his mind it really seems like he has internalized that he is youthful. He calls himself a bum just to appease his father, but he never really grasps that he is an adult now and has run out of time to make changes. The song hints at this fact that we will not be young forever, saying "Gotta do it like you told me, im only getting old. I been sitting on my hope, just waiting for a rope
A little bit to pull me out the bottom of this hole." Jamie does not heed this 'warning and falls into this metaphoric hole. He does not have a firm grasp on reality, much like the rest of his family, and the lyrics of this song really speak to his inability to come to grips with what is happening. Also, the song is a partial remix, with parts of the refrain coming from another song which focuses in on dying young and legacy. This feeds into the irony of Jamie's situation and his dillusions. He knows he drinks, but he does not get his life has passed him by. This refrain, "If I die young, bury me in satin Lay me down on a bed of roses Sink me in the river at dawn Send me away," is all about doing something meaning in life and meeting death head on with pride, and yet, Jamie think he can still accomplish this, even though he is already a middle aged washed-out actor. Jamie is completely caught up in the 'pleasures' of life, much like the singer talks about, but Jamie does not get out of the grip of this life, like the singer warns, and instead gets caught up in it and the dillusions that he can actually still make something out of his life and that he has plenty of time to do so. Like every other character, Jamie is stuck in the past, and this song attests to his life story and dillusions.
