By chapter five of the novel readers understand that Hester has committed the act of adultery and is consequently publicly shamed. In the time of the novel, the Puritans see Hester's sin as an offense against the entire community, not just her husband. Do you think this extends to our time, or do humans today see adultery as a sin between husband and wife, not God/the community? Should humans do anything if adultery should really be seen as an offense against God, or is it a private affair in which others should not intrude?
