www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzeDqRhM09w&list=PL1DEBD1DC5BF4FB38&index=14&feature=plpp_videoSee the stone set in your eyes See the thorn twist in your side. I wait for you. Sleight of hand and twist of fate On a bed of nails she makes me wait And I wait without you With or without you With or without you. Through the storm, we reach the shore You gave it all but I want more And I'm waiting for you With or without you With or without you. I can't live with or without you. And you give yourself away And you give yourself away And you give, and you give And you give yourself away. My hands are tied, my body bruised She´s got me with nothing to win And nothing left to lose. And you give yourself away And you give yourself away And you give, and you give And you give yourself away. With or without you With or without you I can't live With or without you. With or without you With or without you I can't live With or without you With or without you. yeah, we' ll shine like stars in the summer night we' ll shine like stars in the winter babe one heart, one hope, one love With or without you With or without you I can't live With or without you.

The song, With or Without You by U2 reflects the abusive relationship of Mary and Tyrone in Long Days Journey into Night. Tyrone represents the "I" in this song, who sings about Mary, the "you". The first verse of the song presents the woman with a "thorn twist in your side," which can be seen as her pain over her lost son, while the "stone" in her eyes can be seen as the cold, emotionless look Tyrone receives from her. The line "slight of hand and twist of fate," refers to the rheumatism Mary has received by taking morphine, and shows how when she commits these acts she is changing their fate together. The main chorus of "with or without you" shows how, even though he is being torn apart by watching her "give yourself away" to her morphine addiction, he still want to be with her. Mary’s belief that “once they’re [things] done they make you do other things until at last everything comes between you and what you’d like to be, and you’ve lost your true self forever,” shows that she does not believe herself to have the free will to change her situation (61). Though with her, or without her, the problem is the same, because of his love he feels as if his "hands are tied," resembling the fact that he has no freewill, he can't do anything. The line "through the storm, we reach the shore" relates to the fog which is a symbol for the feeling of not really living, but living in a drugged state. In the first act of Long Days Journey into Night, Mary and Tyrone had reached the shore; they are shown as in love, because she is her “dear old self again”. Yet as the song depicts, she is not giving her full self, and she will not be able to be her true self for him, and he will become a “tired, bitterly sad old man” again, because their relationship is in a constant cycle of abuse.
