This song relates to As I Lay Dying, especially with Darl. Throughout As I Lay Dying, the family members are constantly searching for a connection to Addie after her death. Darl is the character that seemed to be most affected by her death. The song says, “Even though going on with you gone still upsets me There are days every now and again I pretend I’m ok But that’s not what gets me.” Although Darl and the rest of the Bundrens continue on with their lives, they still have the memory of Addie. One of the reasons why Darl goes insane could be due to the fact that he didn’t have his mother’s love. The refrain of the song speaks to this loss. “What hurts the most Is being so close And having so much to say And watching you walk away And never knowing What could have been And not seeing that loving you Is what I was trying to do.” Darl was obviously “so close” to his mother, but he was never able to share his love for her. Addie even stated that once she had Darl “she knew that life was terrible” (Faulkner). Addie never reciprocated the love that Darl desired, which caused him to constantly crave it even after her death. This song clearly parallels the feelings that Darl and the Bundren family have towards Addie throughout the novel.
